I've just watched Japanese TV program about last year Hit products.
One of those was "Slanket". Slanket is composed from "sleeve" and "blanket".
It means a blanket with sleeves. ( I think...)
Mm...pretty cool.
The strong point of slanket is that you can read a book or write e-mail easily while staying warm in the blanket. Normally, in winter, when we tie ourselves with blanket, our body is warm but it's quite irritating when we want to reach our hands to do something.
When I read the story about slanket, I think this might be another interesting and successful user innovation.
The innovator's name is Gary (which I couldn't find his last name, sorry.) He's from Maine, one of the harshest and coldest states in the U.S. In year 2009, the lowest temperature is -46 Celcius degree :( I couldn't imagine that.
In 1998, Gary cut his sleeping bag so that he could reach his arms out to do something while his body is still warm. In Christmas, he asked his mother to make this "slanket" for him. 10 years passed, and slanket became one of the hit products in U.S. and Japan.
I think we can call Gary as "Lead User", based on Eric von Hippel idea. The main characteristics of lead user are
1. They are at the leading edge of the important market trends.
(which means, they encounter and realize the problem earlier than other users in the market)
2. They have strong incentive to find solutions for their novel needs
In this case, Gary had to suffer from harsh cold winter in Maine so he had strong incentive to over come this problem. And he realized that his idea would work and other people might also have the same problem with him, so he developed this product and sold it. If only the blanket companies or whatever encouter Gary, they might also have become a billionaire.
It is also found that the innovation by lead users are innovative and hit other users' heart. The companies can find lead users and cooperate with them in order to make a new innovative product. I will write a story about this "Lead user method" if I....have time and incentive to :P
